Explaining Tor security levels

What Newbie, Standard, and Safest modes actually disable, and why Safest mode works well for most modern dark net markets.

Tor Browser offers three discrete security levels. They control which elements load and how strict the isolation boundaries are. Choosing the wrong one creates two distinct problems. Too low, and you leak fingerprint data that identifies your hardware or screen size. Too high, and you break functionality on sites that rely on modern web technologies. Most users default to Standard. It disables certain scripts and blocks trackers, but allows enough compatibility for typical websites to render correctly. It is a reasonable starting point if you are visiting news sites or blogs. It is less suitable for interactive platforms.

What each level changes

  • Newbie Mode keeps everything enabled. Scripts run freely. Fonts load normally. Images display fully. It is basically regular browsing but routed through Tor. It leaks the most information about your device configuration.
  • Standard Mode restricts inline scripts and prevents certain third-party resources. It blocks ads and tracks more aggressively. Some interactive features on complex sites may stop working, but general browsing remains smooth.
  • Safest Mode strips out nearly all non-essential content. JavaScript is disabled except for specific whitelisted cases. Iframes are blocked. Inline styles are restricted. Fonts are removed. Images may fail to load unless they are critical to layout. This maximizes anonymity by reducing the number of variables attackers can measure.

Recommendation for marketplaces

Most major dark net markets, including Anubis, function correctly under Safest Mode. The frontend is built with static assets and limited scripting. Complex animations or dynamic loading sequences are rare. Setting your browser to Safest ensures that your fingerprint stays consistent regardless of which relay chain you traverse. If a page loads slowly or shows missing images, wait ten seconds. Often the assets arrive once the initial request completes. If functionality breaks entirely, drop to Standard temporarily to test, then move back up once you finish your session. Do not stay on Newbie. The extra speed gained is worth far less than the exposure created. See the notes on security considerations and the access tutorial at getting started for context on why these settings matter.
